Population is not spread the way land is

Two countries carry the darkest shade and they sit next to each other. Look at what surrounds them: Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam are all darker than any country in Europe. Then compare this map with the land-area map on the sibling article, and the two barely agree anywhere.

The top two are a category of their own: India and China hold roughly a third of everyone alive, and no third country is within a billion of them. Then comes a long gap to United States at 341.8M, and after that the ranking gets genuinely difficult, because half a dozen countries sit within a few tens of millions of each other and their order changes with every revision.

The handover nobody announced

India overtook China in 2023, ending a lead China had held for the whole of recorded demographic history. China's population is now falling, by roughly two million a year, while India's still grows. That single fact resets a lot of trivia written before 2023, and it is the most common out-of-date answer you will hear.

The European surprise

No European country makes the top ten except Russia at 9th. Germany, the EU's largest member, is 19th at 83.5M; the United Kingdom is 22nd and France 23rd, both under 70 million. Vietnam (16th), Egypt (13th) and the Philippines (14th) are all larger than any of them, which is the fact most European players get wrong in a population round.

Bangladesh is the clearest illustration: 8th in the world by population, 92nd by land area. It fits more people than Russia into a country smaller than the state of Iowa. Any ranking round that mixes population with size is testing whether you can hold two unrelated maps in your head at once.

How to remember this table

• India first, China second. Update your reflex if it still runs the other way.
• Then a gap, then the US. Nothing else is close to the top three.
• Indonesia is fourth, and is the country most often placed too low.
• Bigger than any European country except Russia: Vietnam, Egypt, the Philippines, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria.
