Which country has won the most World Cup matches? (Not the same as trophies)

Football's real map

South America and western Europe carry the dark shades, and the map has holes: no United Kingdom, because the home nations compete separately, and no shade at all for countries that have never reached a tournament. The pale-but-present countries are the interesting ones, the ones with appearances and almost no wins.

This is the ranking almost every quiz gets muddled, because two completely different tables live under the phrase "most World Cup wins". One counts trophies, where Brazil has five, Germany and Italy four each, Argentina three, and France and Uruguay two. The other counts matches won across the whole history of the tournament, which is the table above. They rank the same countries in a different order, and both are correct answers to differently worded questions.

Appearances: who keeps qualifying

Mexico is the interesting name here: 5th for appearances against 10th for match wins. It qualifies almost every time and rarely goes deep. Uruguay is the mirror image, 9th for appearances but 8th for wins, carrying two trophies from an era when the tournament was a fraction of its current size.

The England question

There is no United Kingdom entry in either table, because England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete separately and have done since before FIFA existed. Any dataset keyed by country rather than by football association therefore has a hole where the UK should be, which is why this ranking, and the Geopolitix football rounds built on it, leave the UK out rather than inventing a merged figure.

How to remember this table

• Brazil, Germany, Argentina, then France and Italy. That is the top five of match wins, and it moves very slowly.
• Trophies and match wins are different questions. If a quiz says 'most World Cup wins' without saying which, both answers are defensible.
• Mexico over-indexes on appearances, Uruguay on trophies. Neither matches its match-win rank.
• No UK entry. The four home nations compete separately.
