The medal map is Europe, dark almost end to end, plus the United States, Australia, Japan, China and a handful of others. Everything else, including countries of over a hundred million people, sits in the palest band. Nothing on this blog is less related to population than this.

The distance between first and second is the story. United States's 3,128 is roughly three times United Kingdom's 1,019, a margin no other all-time sporting table shows. Two structural advantages compound it: American athletes have competed in almost every Games since 1896, and the American programme is strongest in the sports that award the most medals per event, swimming and athletics, where a single Games can yield dozens.

The countries that no longer exist

Any all-time table has to decide what to do with dissolved states, and every source decides differently. The Soviet Union won over 1,000 medals in 18 Games and appears as its own line, not folded into Russia, which is why Russia shows 540 here rather than a much larger number. East and West Germany are usually listed separately from unified Germany, which is why Germany's 981 understates what German athletes have won. Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia are the same problem in miniature.

Small countries, large hauls

Per head of population, the leaders look nothing like the table above. Hungary (12th overall, on a population of 9.5M), Norway (10th, 5.6M) and Finland (15th, 5.6M) are extraordinary outliers. Norway's position is almost entirely a Winter Games record; Finland's and Hungary's are built on a handful of sports pursued with national seriousness for a century.

The Paralympic table is a different table

The same country leads, but the order behind it changes: the United Kingdom is 2nd on the Paralympic table against 2nd on the Olympic one, and China is 3rd versus 6th. The Paralympic Games only began in 1960, so the table rewards recent, well-funded programmes rather than a century of participation, which is exactly why it reorders.

How to remember this table

• The US, then daylight. Three times the next country. Any round with the US in it has an obvious top card.
• Europe fills places two to five, in some order: UK, Germany, France, Italy.
• Sweden and Norway are top ten, on Winter Games strength and populations under 11 million.
• Population predicts almost nothing. India, Indonesia and Nigeria are near the bottom despite vast populations.
